What Summer 2008 Volunteers Left Behind
After a summer full of community projects with a star team of volunteers, our 8 week Cusco 2008 program came to a close on August 9. OR DID IT? We are proud to have left quite a few seedling projects behind that will grow and strengthen with continued support from volunteers in the years to come. Our team's "seedlings" include....Building a fence for play area in a low-income preschool program, Wawa Wasi; Teaching AFUVAPEDISS members to shop for, bake, and profit from brownie, rice crispy, and oatmeal cookies (AFUVAPEDISS is a organization for people physical disabilities); Collaborating with local health care professionals and college students to author (in Spanish) and distribute a Health Education booklet about contraception methods, disease/infection prevention, and healthy relationships; Designing and painting mural/organization sign for La Casa de Acogida, a temporary residence for survivors of domestic violence; Offering free ESL classes for public university and kindergarten students. Whether you sign up as a College Student, Independent Traveler, or Family, you can work to stretch and strengthen the community projects above.
Pen Pal Exchange Begins
University of Buffalo Student gets Students Moving, Grooving, and Writing
Volunteer Victoria Austin spent a week in Chimbote sharing ESL and cultural exchange activities with the students of Mi Segundo Hogar. Worried that a having “just a week” to volunteer isn’t enough? Volunteers like Victoria can take away your doubts. Between Monday and Friday, Victoria started a second grade pen pal project, led ESL games for preschool and elementary students, joined in a sandboarding promotion project with high school juniors, and attended a Spanish Literature class at a local university. Muchas gracias, Victoria!
Music to Their Ears
Blues Guitarist (and Lawyer) from Vermont Arrives to Sing in the Spring
With guitar in hand, Michael arrived in Trujillo for the September “Music in Motion” 10-day program. During his week in the “City of Eternal Spring”, Michael shared his song with four different young audiences. At the school called Niños Monserrate, he performed with guitar in celebration of the institution’s anniversary. With the preschoolers of La Beneficencia, Michael created rhythm instruments from recycled materials so that the children could play along, as he taught them children’s songs that he had adapted to Spanish. At Hogar San Jose, a boy’s home, Michael worked for several afternoons instructing a small group of teens in guitar. And, to finish off his week, he became a guest member of a folkloric Peruvian band at an event for family and friends of Hogar de la Nina. There’s nothing quite like the smile that music and good company brings!

Where are we?:
CHIMBOTE
Looking for an immersion experience “off the beaten path”? Chimbote is located 6 hours north of Lima on the Pacific Coast, and a city that has been untapped by foreign travelers and volunteer organizations. It’s also Juan Carlos’s home town – so you’ll get to meet his mom! See upcoming Program in Chimbote
SAN SEBASTIAN (Cusco)
When we say “Peru”, most people say “Cusco” or “Machu Picchu”. For that reason, we set up a Peru 109 location in the majestic Andes Mountains in the town of San Sebastian. Your host community will teach you about the traditions of a typical Andean community, and during your free time you will be just 15 minutes away from downtown Cusco See upcoming Program in San Sebastian
TRUJILLO
Known as the “Spring City”, and famous for its neighboring beach of Huanchaco and the pre-Incan ruins of Chan-Chan, Trujillo is located about 8 hours north of Lima on the Pacific Coast. The friendly people and beautiful surroundings make this an increasingly popular destination for volunteers and tourists alike. See upcoming Program in Trujillo
