Where in the world are the Olivos?
The 3 Olivos Take it to the Streets
Anne, Juan Carlos, and Simon Visit
with College Students, Staff, and Faculty
This Fall, we have had the opportunity to get to know many of the wonderful college campuses within our driving range. To begin, Anne took a Southern route and visited the campuses of Babson, Lasell, Dickinson, Wilson, JMU, Washington and Lee, Virginia Tech, Radford, Mary Baldwin, Hollins, Roanoke, Davidson, High Point, Elon, Wake Forest, Richmond, Randolph-Macon, and Mary Washington. Then, strengthened by the company of Juan Carlos and faithful llama friend Simon, the Olivos visited with students, staff, and faculty closer to home at UVM, St. Michael’s, Landmark, Castleton State, Franklin Pierce, Bard, Williams, Bennington, Simon’s Rock, Lyndon State, and Wellesley. Have a suggestion for our 2009 College Tour? Let us know! We are proud that about 70% of our Team Program volunteers are college students who choose to devote their breaks to making the world a bit smaller. |

Tennis Arrives at Mi Segundo Hogar
UK Volunteer and Wilson Donation Make PE Initiative Possible
 |
|
Thanks to volunteer Jeff Gittins and Wilson representative Nigel Miller,
there is a new sport in the neighborhood of Miraflores Bajo – tennis! For the past month,
Jeff, an experienced ESL teacher, has taken a break from his home in the UK to offer his time
and teaching skills to the students aged 3 to 16 in our project site in coastal Chimbote.
Four days a week, he teaches beginner tennis in the patio area of Mi Segundo Hogar, as a complement to his
time assisting with English classes. MUCHAS GRACIAS to Jeff for all his work in providing us with
the necessary supplies for this new physical education program, |
and to Amer Sports, the Wilson distributor who
donated 8 brand new rackets. We look forward to many years of Peruvian and foreign volunteers
alike maintaining the energy behind this fitness and cultural exhange. |

Let’s Hit the Dunes!
Peru 109 Volunteers Take Advantage of their Coastal Surroundings
What can you do with a sand dune?
In Chimbote and Trujillo, two of our host communities, these natural beauties are our athletic
field and a unique way to enjoy the coastal scenery. Not sure what sandboarding entails?
Think snowboarding -- minus the bulky outerwear, painful icy landings, and the slick speed.
During our Winter and Spring programs, we offer sandboarding outings on the weekends to our
volunteers and their host families. It's a great physical challenge that comes with lots of laughs!
|
|
 |
As one of the first promoters of sandboarding in Chimbote, Juan Carlos is an
excellent instructor for those who have never been on a board. He has been sharing his love of this sport with all ages and abilities since 1998.

Introducing: "Self-Direct and Connect"
New Name for Low-Cost Option for Independent-Minded Travelers
 |
|
You may have noticed there’s a new name for one of the program options
for Independent Travelers on our updated website called “Self-Direct and Connect”.
This is a unique opportunity for volunteers aged 21 and over who are ready to take
a more active role in collaborating with service site staff in order to engage their
host community in the project of their choice. Each SDC volunteer is matched with a
host family and volunteer position, and works directly with local staff and volunteers to create and
maintain a daily/weekly routine. |
SDC volunteers have a Spanish level high enough so as to be ready to independently manage the day-to-day communications within their host homes, service sites, and transportation providers. There are numerous volunteer positions open year-round in San Sebastian (Cusco), Trujillo, and Chimbote.
